Built inside a real operation, not a boardroom
ShiftArc started as an internal tool for a four-site operation that had run out of patience with its scheduling software.
We didn't set out to build a scheduling product. We set out to stop losing an afternoon every week to fixing time punches by hand.
When we finally exported the data from the old system and counted, the picture was worse than the feeling: 86% of punches had been hand-edited, 1,164 shifts had no break recorded at all, and 247 punches had simply been left running past twelve hours. Not one open shift had ever been claimed in the app — every gap had been filled by group text.
None of that was the staff's fault. The tool made the wrong thing easy. So we rebuilt it around the failures instead of the feature list: a clock that closes its own forgotten punches, a queue that only asks about the punches that look wrong, and a pay period you can lock so the numbers stop moving after payroll goes out.
It ran a live operation for a full season before we sold it to anyone else. That's still the bar for every feature we add.
Principles
Four rules we don't bend
Flag it, never fake it
When a punch looks wrong, we surface it and ask a human. We will never quietly rewrite someone's hours to make a report look tidy — an edit always carries a reason and a name.
Locked means locked
Once a pay period is closed and the payroll file is out, nobody can reach back and change history. Payroll disputes should be settled by a record, not a memory.
Location is context, not a leash
The clock records where a punch happened so you can trust it. It doesn't strand a person outside a geofence with a shift to start — no GPS still means clocked in, just flagged.
The busy season shouldn't cost more
We price per location because charging per person punishes the exact moment you need the most help.
